Michael Zeheter: Fizzy or still? Mineral water as a consumer good

Drinking mineral water has a long history. It has been classed as a drink since the advent of the spa resorts in the 19th century, combining prestige with a characteristic taste. This combination has made it something special in the eyes of consumers, and today they are even prepared to many times the price of tap water. But this alone doesn’t explain how it developed from being an exclusive medicinal remedy to the mass consumer good that it is today. The average consumption in 2016 in Germany was 148 liters.

Dr. Michael Zeheter is a research assistant in the Department of Recent and Modern History at the University of Trier.

This lecture is part of the lecture series “Water – Habitat, Haven, Resource”. The lecture series draws together aspects of our relationship with water and its importance in scientific research in diverse fields.

This event is organized by the International Center for Culture and Technology Research (IZKT) at the University of Stuttgart and the Stuttgart City Library. In cooperation with the Lindenmuseum Stuttgart, der Wilhelma Zoological-Botanical Garden in Stuttgart, the SES-Stadtentwässerung Stuttgart, the Verbraucherzentrale Baden-Württemberg e.V., the state initiative “Our Neckar” and the BMBF research project WECHSEL at the University of Stuttgart.
