Refund of fees

An overview of the preconditions and deadlines for a refund of fees which have to be observed.

If certain criteria are met the following fees can be refunded:

  • Administrative fees
  • Student Services fees
  • Student Union fees and
  • Tuition fees.

To receive a refund please submit the application for refund (PDF) before the deadline via our contact form. If a completed request is not submitted, we will be unable to reimburse you.

During a leave of absence, you can only apply for an exemption from paying tuition fees. Please use the application for exemption from tuition fees and send it to us before the lecture period begins.

If you have paid the semester fee or/and the tuition fee but don’t get enrolled, the money will be refunded as soon as you

  • renounce your university place informally by post, by e-mail or/and on the refund application and
  • submit the Application for Refund by post or e-mail.

If your enrollment is cancelled before 30 September (winter semester) or 31 March (summer semester) at the latest the semester fee (administrative, student services and student union fee) and the tuition fee can be refunded. For this please submit the following documents to the department Application, Admission, Enrollment on time:

  • an informal written application for cancellation of enrollment,
  • the student card ECUS,
  • the Application for Refund.

After 30 September (winter semester) or 31 March (summer semester) the refund follows the regulations for the immediate de-registration.

An immediate de-registration is possible in some special cases (list of special cases). Then please submit the following documents to the department Student Service and Examination Office:

  • the Application for De-Registration with the respective verifications
  • the student card ECUS,
  • the Application for Refund.

The deadlines are as follows:

  • Processed de-registration (date of de-registration) and receipt of the refund application before 31 October or 30 April: refund of the semester fee (administrative, student services and student union fee) and the tuition fee.
  • Processed de-registration (date of de-registration) by one month after the beginning of the lecture period: refund of the administrative fee, the student union fee and the tuition fee.
    This time period ends one month after the day that precedes the day which either by designation or number corresponds to the first day of the period (cf. §§ 187 subs. 2, 188 subs. 2 BGB). An example: If the lecture period begins on 10 October the time period begins on 10 October, 0:00 am, and ends on 9 November, 12:00 pm. Thus the de-registration application has to be received by the department Student Service and Examination Office before 9 November, 12:00 pm, so that the refund can be executed.
    The refund of the student services fee is only possible in exceptional cases and has to be requested at the Studierendenwerk Stuttgart.
  • Later de-registration: a refund is not possible anymore.

The de-registration is always executed by the end of semester when you de-register regularly by the end of semester or when you are de-registered ex officio. If you already transferred the semester fee or/and the tuition fee for the following semester your payment will be refunded. For this please submit the Application for Refund by post or e-mail promptly.

If you are registered and transferred too much money you have two possibilities:

  • You send the Application for Refund by post or e-mail to get the money back.
  • You let the overpayment be transferred into the next semester so that you have to pay less for your next re-registration. This transfer will automatically be processed shortly before the beginning of the re-registration period. If the transfer has not been processed by 15 January or 15 July please send an e-mail.

Semester fee: The semester fee is bound to your enrollment. Because you remain enrolled during a leave of absence, the semester fee has to be paid in full for a semester of leave and cannot be refunded. A partial refund is not possible.

Tuition fee: An exemption from the tuition fee for a semester of leave is possible. To apply, send your application for a leave of absence with all supporting documents and your application for exemption from tuition fees by post or via email before the lecture period begins. If we receive your applications before the re-registration deadline, you will be exempted from paying tuition fees. If we receive the applications between the re-registration deadline and the beginning of the lecture period, we will refund the tuition fee.
