Intensive Course and Extensive Course

If you are an exchange or program student or a Master of Science student in a selected study program this is what you need to know about available German as a Second Language offers.

Office hours

The International Office offers office hours on site to international students and to all students interested in studying abroad:

Monday & Wednesday 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Intensive Course

You are ...

  • a visiting program student or exchange student
  • a student of one of the international Master of Science programs
  • a student in a Double Master program

and you are enrolled at the University of Stuttgart for a minimum of one semester.

  • Winter semester 2024/25 classes run from September 6 to Friday, October 11, 2024
  • 23.08.2024: Placement test (online)
  • 02.09.2024: Registration (For questions, please contact the Incoming Department: incoming@ia.uni-stuttgart.de)
  • 03.09.2024: Useful information concerning the Intensive German Course (online)
  • 06.09.2024: First day of classes
  • 11.10.2024: Last day of classes / Final Exam

Course schedule

  • Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 1 pm or 1:30 pm – 6 pm
  • ECTS credits: 6

The time shift cannot be freely chosen. It depends on your placement, whether you have classes in the morning or in the afternoon (CET). You will be informed about your schedule a few days before the course is going to start.

  • Summer semester 2025: March 6 to April 4
    • 21.02.2025 Placement test (online)
    • 27.02.2025 Useful information concerning the Intensive German Course (online)
    • 06.03.2025 First day of classes
    • 04.04.2025 Last day of classes / Final Exam

Class schedule:

  • Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 1 pm or 1:30 pm – 6 pm
  • ECTS credits: 6

The time shift cannot be freely chosen. It depends on your placement, whether you have classes in the morning or in the afternoon (CET). You will be informed about your schedule a few days before the course is going to start.

Depending on your teacher, classes will be held face to face or online. By the beginning of March we will be sending you your schedule. There you can find both the time shift and the information whether your course will be face to face or online.

The Intensive German as a Second Language courses are offered for the following different language/proficiency levels, provided there are enough students to form a class:

  • A1
  • A2
  • B1
  • B2
  • C1 (winter semester)

Application:

Possible via the Mobility-Online portal. You will receive access to the portal by your advisor at the International Office at the University of Stuttgart.

International Master of Science Students apply directly through their program directors.

Application deadline for MSc students:

  • June 30 (for the upcoming winter semester)
  • January 31 (for the upcoming summer semester)

Application deadline for all other students:

  • May 1 (for the upcoming winter semester)
  • November 1 (for the upcoming summer semester)

After applying:

  1. Be sure to show up punctually on the arrival dates specified under “Key dates” above.
  2. Register in the Incoming section of the International Office.

Students with good attendance at the Intensive German Course, who pass the final exam receive 6 ECTS credit points.

Note

Students from the “Overseas” exchange program who receive a Baden-Württemberg scholarship from the University of Stuttgart are required to attend the Intensive German Course.

Note on Masters of Science programs: Only students in the following study programs may take our German language classes: MIP, WAREM, WASTE, PHYSICS and Geoengine.

Extensive Course

The following proficiency levels are offered in the extensive German as a Second Language course:

  • A1.2
  • A2 (A 2.1, A 2.2)
  • B1 (B 1.1, B 1.2)

Winter semester 2024/25:

  • Classes start on: October 21, 2024
  • Classes end on: February 5, 2025
  • Christmas vacation: December 23, 2024 – January 10, 2025

Schedule:

  • Monday or Wednesday, 5:45 – 9 pm (4 hrs/week)
  • ECTS credit points: 3

The weekday cannot be freely chosen. You will be informed about your schedule a few days before the course is going to start.

Summer semester 2024:

  • Classes start on: April 17, 2024 – Classes end on: July 17, 2024
  • Pentecoste vacation: Mai 20  - 26, 2024

Classes:

  • Monday or Wednesday, 5:45 – 9 pm (4 hrs/week)
  • ECTS credit points: 3

The weekday cannot be freely chosen. You will be informed about your schedule a few days before the course is going to start.

Students with good attendance at the Extensive Course and that pass the final exam receive 3 ECTS credit points.

Eligible students do not need to register for the course. After completing the course you will receive a report card that will indicate your grade.
