Intensive course and extensive course

If you are an exchange or program student or a Master of Science student in a selected study program this is what you need to know about available German as a Second Language offerings.

Online consultation hours at the International Office!
As of now the International Office offers online consultation hours to international students (Mo + Wed 1.30 p.m. to 4 p.m. & Tue + Thurs 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.). The IZ remains closed until further notice! 

The intensive course

The intensive German course is designed for exchange students from partner universities in the European Union (Erasmus+) or from overseas, for students in our international Master’s and dual degree programs and for Erasmus Mundus students.

You are ...

  • a visiting program student or exchange student
  • a student of one of the international Master of Science programs
  • a student in a Double Master program

and you are enrolled at the University of Stuttgart for a minimum of one semester.

  • Winter semester 2021/22 classes run from Wednesday, September 1 to Friday, October 15, 2021

Please note: The decision on whether the course will be offered online or face-to-face will be taken in June 2021.

*By the end of August you'll be told if you are in group A or B.

Course schedule

  •    Monday to Friday 4,5 hours per day – you will be informed about your personal timetable in early September. 
  • Summer semester 2021: March 1 to April 9
    • 22.02.2021 Placement test
    • 01.03.2021 Registration
    • 03.03.2021 Useful information concerning the Intensive German Course (video conference)
    • 08.03.2021 First day of classes
    • 09.04.2021 Last day of classes / Final Exam

Class schedule:

  • Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 1 pm or 1:30 pm – 6 pm

The time shift can't be freely chosen. It depends on your placement, whether you have classes in the morning or in the afternoon (CET). You'll be informed about your schedule a few days before the course is going to start.

Classes will be held online.

The intensive German as a second language courses are offered for the following different language/proficiency levels:

  • A1
  • A2
  • B1
  • B2
  • C1


Possible via the Mobility-Online portal. You will receive access to the portal by your advisor at the International Office at the University of Stuttgart.

International Master of Science Students apply directly through their program directors.

Application deadline for MSc students:

  • June 30 (for the upcoming winter semester)
  • January 31 (for the upcoming summer semester)

Application deadline for all other students:

  • May 1 (for the upcoming winter semester)
  • November 1 (for the upcoming summer semester)

After applying:

  1. Be sure to show up punctually on the arrival dates specified under “Key dates” above.
  2. Register in the Incoming Section of the International Office.

Students with good attendance at the intensive course who pass the final exam receive - according to the length of the course - 6 to 8 ECTS credit points.


The intensive course is mandatory for overseas students studying on a University of Stuttgart scholarship.

Note on Masters of Science programs: Only students in the following study programs may take our German language classes: MIP, WAREM, WASTE, PHYSICS, and Geoengine.

Students are taught learning techniques in the intensive course and how to communicate effectively and deliberately, skills they can put to good use later in their studies at a German university.

Extensive course

The following proficiency levels are offered in the extensive German as a Second Language course:

  • A1+
  • A2 (A 2.1, A 2.2, A 2+)
  • B1 (B 1.1, B 1.2, B 1+)

Winter semester 2020/21:

  • Classes formed by: October, 14 20120
  • Classes start on: October 19, 2020 – Classes end on: February 6, 2021
  • Christmas vacation: December 21, 2020 – January 6, 2021


  • Monday or Wednesday, 5:45 – 9 pm (4 hrs/week)

*Class divisions are posted in the lobby area of the Intercultural Training Section, International Division.Participants will also be notified by email.  

Summer semester 2020:

  • Classes formed by: April, 20 2020
  • Classes start on: April 27, 2020 – Classes end on: July 15, 2020
  • Pentecoste vacation: Juni 1 - 6, 2020


  • Monday or Wednesday, 5:45 – 9 pm (4 hrs/week)

*Class divisions are posted in the lobby area of the Intercultural Training Section, International Division.Participants will also be notified by email.  

Students with good attendance at the extensive course and that pass the final exam receive 3 ECTS credit points.

Eligible students do not need to register for the course.  After completing the course you will receive a report card that will indicate your grade.
