The Master of Arts English and American Studies / English Linguistics (MA EASEL) is an English-language MA program focussing on English language and literature. It is research-oriented and applies empirical state-of-the art methods for addressing current research issues. As the name suggests, the study program offers two specialization areas: English and American Studies, and English Linguistics.
These two areas of specialization reflect the research specializations of the following English departments at the University of Stuttgart:
- The Department of American Literature and Culture and the Department of English Literatures and Cultures, which focus on research into canonical texts as well as on issues regarding post-modernism, post-colonialism, interdisciplinary cultural studies and media studies.
- The Department of English Linguistics, which focuses on theoretical and empirical research in linguistics.
Students specialize in one of two areas from the start of the program: English and American literature (literature track), or Linguistics (linguistics track). In addition, there are the following shared modules:
- joint lecture series on current research topics and methodologies in English literature and linguistics
- interdisciplinary module on academic topics outside of core specialization
- English language courses
In English Linguistics, our team is involved in
- internationally visible research in selected topics in phonology, syntax, semantics and/or pragmatics, using a variety of experimental methods, and to address issues in grammatical theory and/or psycholinguistics.
Prerequisites: We expect students to have a solid background in linguistics, for further specifications see here.
