Chemical Sciences

Master of Science

Standard Period of Study: 4 semesters
Teaching Language: English

How is the program structured?

Chemical Sciences starts every winter semester (October) and is designed to be completed within four semesters. A total amount of 120 ECTS must be completed.

The program comprises compulsory modules (35 %) along with an extensive selection of elective modules (65 %) to meet the individual interests and abilities of the students.

You can choose one of the modules (6 ECTS):

  • Foundations of Biochemistry for Advanced Students
  • Fundamentals of Technical Chemistry
  • Introduction to Theoretical and Computational Chemistry
  • Fundamentals of Polymer Chemistry and Physics

Specialize in our four research profiles:

  • Sustainable Synthesis and Catalysis
  • Smart Materials and Functional Molecules
  • Biological Chemistry and Biotechnology
  • Theory and Simulation in Chemistry and Materials Sciences

There is a list of modules to choose from for each profile ranging from 3 to 6 ECTS. Some modules are only offered in biannual frequency. So early planning of your individual schedule is recommended.

Rules:

  • A total of 30 ECTS must be completed of which at least 18 ECTS from graded modules (BSL)
  • 12 ECTS can be freely selected from the research profiles and from elective modules not included in the profiles.
  • A maximum of 12 ECTS can be non-graded modules (USL)

Two research internships provide a first insight into the state-of-the-art research in the working groups of the faculty, world class research institutes, or in industry. During this time, you will get an impression of the current problems in chemical research and will learn how to present your own research work in oral and written form.

Please note:

  • The two research internships must be completed with different examiners. Students are responsible for fulfilling this requirement.
  • After approval by the dean of studies, one of the two research internships may also be carried out in another faculty of the University of Stuttgart or in a department of the Max Planck or Frauenhofer Institutes in Stuttgart, provided that a chemistry-related research question is being addressed.
  • One or both research internships may be carried out during a stay abroad.

The Master's thesis completes the Chemical Sciences program. Guided and supervised by a mentor, you will work independently on a project in the field of Chemistry over a period of 6 months. You will apply scientific methods and present and discuss your results in a written thesis and a scientific talk.

The topic of the Master's thesis can be assigned at the earliest when at least 78 ECTS have been completed. Possible topics are listed on the websites of the respective groups.
