Man is by nature an ethical and moral being. In philosophy we like to call man the hearing being, because it is through hearing that one's own thoughts and emotions connect with the natural and the technical outside world. We speak silently to ourselves and listen to ourselves while meditating. Our hearing is highly individual, each person develops his/her own hearing biography, personal preferences and listening habits during his/her lifetime and values his/her own approach to the world. By nature, humans unfold their dialogical being through speaking and listening, they are mindful and attentive to noise, melody and silence.

Dr. phil. Monika Gatt researches and teaches the metaphysical and natural philosophical foundations of acoustics, ethics in the engineering sciences, and phenomenology at the Technical University of Munich.
