Application

The application period will start on December 01, 2017 and will end on December 17, 2017. On this website you will find all information on the application process for the Germany Scholarship (Deutschlandstipendium).

Application period: from December 01, 2017 to December 17, 2017!
In the case of postal delivery, the postmark date is applicable.

Students who receive a scholarship will presumably be notified in writing until the end of April 2018 (but no later than the end of May 2018). Students who do not receive a scholarship will not be informed!

This notice provides advance information on the call for applications starting December 01, 2017. To successfully apply for a Germany Scholarship, you have to meet certain conditions and provide certain evidence. Detailed information on these prerequisites can be found here.

According to the Statutes of the University of Stuttgart on the Awarding Process of the Germany Scholarship [Satzung der Universität Stuttgart für die Vergabe von Deutschlandstipendien], the Rector’s Office of the University of Stuttgart is calling for applications for about 181 scholarships for summer semester 2018, lasting from April 01, 2018 to March 31, 2019.

The scholarship amounts to 300 € per month, half of which is financed by a sponsor and the other half by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The scholarship is meant to support students who

  • are expected to, or have already produced outstanding academic or professional achievements = Grade Criterion

and

  • are able to provide evidence of Additional Criteria e.g.:
    • social or ecological commitments, involvement in higher education policy, etc.
    • exceptional circumstances (personal, social, family, etc.)
    • special prizes or distinctions
    • a notable personal development
    • further skills.

Evidence of additional criteria must include information on the kind and duration of the commitment (from...to) as well as the number of hours per week/month/year, if applicable.

This scholarship is talent-oriented and achievement-oriented. 181 scholarships are offered to about 15.000 students.

The 181 scholarships are divided as follows:

  • 87 earmarked scholarships are given to the degree programs listed below.
  • 94 uncommitted scholarships are given to a degree program without being bound to a specific purpose. The Rector's Office allocated these uncommitted scholarships to the faculties 1-10 as indicated below. Therefore, every applicant has a chance for a scholarship, regardless of his/her degree program!

Based on the applications, the scholarship committee of the respective faculty determines a ranking with list places, according to which the award takes place.

The Rector’s Office divides the 181 scholarships between freshmen and students as follows:

Students students from 1st or 2nd semester (without Master) from 1st semester in Master's programs
from 3rd semester (Bachelor, Master, Teaching Qualification State Exam.)

 For a promising application, please note that at the time of the application, you should:

  • be able to provide evidence that your last regular semester did not take place before summer semester 2018,
  • have acquired the necessary amount of credit points according to the curriculum of your degree program (does not apply for 1st or 2nd semester)
  • be able to provide evidence of the specified average (grade criterion)*
  • be able to provide evidence of the additional criteria
  • be enrolled at the University of Stuttgart in summer semester 2018
  • Please note that if you are enrolled in one of the Bachelor´s programs in the winter semester 2017/18 and expect an admission confirmation for a Master´s program for summer semester 2018, your application will be considered among other applications for the Master´s degree programs, 1st semester (2nd semester, if applicable).


*Few exceptions:
If you do not meet the minimum grade criterion, but can provide evidence for other specified additional criteria, your application can be taken into consideration by the scholarship committee in very exceptional cases, provided that your average grade only deviates slightly from the top grade.

The application is submitted for the degree program in which the applicants are enrolled. In case of combined degree programs, the application is submitted for a major subject. Minor and complimentary subjects are excluded. Multiple applications are prohibited. 

Students in the 1st and 2nd semester of the B.Sc., B.A., State Examination for Teachers degree programs, BA/MA teaching qualification programs:
For a promising application, the average grade of your Abitur or university entrance qualification should be at least 1.7 (exceptions: see „Few exceptions“).

Applications that are not submitted in due time and form won’t be taken into consideration in the selection process.
Certificates in German or in English may be submitted in copy form, certified copies are not necessary! If the certificates submitted are not in German or English, a certified German or English translation is necessary.

The application has to be submitted in due time and form and has to include all necessary documents to be taken into consideration. The necessary certificates and documents have to be submitted within the period stipulated together with the application form. It is not possible to submit evidence later.

The following certificates have to be included in the application:

1. Freshmen in the 1st and 2nd semester (Bachelor, Teaching Qualification GymPO, Teaching Qualification B.A.):

  • A copy of the university entrance qualification (e.g. Abitur certificate)
  • Certificate of enrollment

2. Students of Master’s programs in the 1st and 2nd semester:

  • A copy of the Bachelor’s certificate
    if the Bachelor’s certificate is not available yet, a current Transcript of Records of the achievements in the Bachelor’s studies (not older than December 1, 2017). (Students of the University of Stuttgart enclose the „Transcript of Records of previously attained results including credit points, average grade and current semester".   • Certificate of enrollment

3. Students from the 3rd semester of the Bachelor‘s and Master’s programs, and Teaching Qualification programs BA/MA, Teaching Qualification programs GymPO according to the regulation of the Ministry of Culture and Education on the first academic state examination for teaching at grammar schools, (as amended):

4. Students in the last semester of a BA program applying for a Germany Scholarship in a Master’s program for summer semester 2018:

  • The application is only promising if you are enrolled in the Master’s degree program until May 15, 2018! Please fill in the application form as follows: Degree: Master, Number of Semesters: 1 (2, if applicable)
  • A copy of the Bachelor’s certificate, if available
  • If you have not received the Bachelor’s certificate yet: a current Transcript of Records of the achievements in the Bachelor’s studies (not older than December 1, 2017). 5. A curriculum vitae (Uni Stuttgart form, not your own)

6. Additional Criteria: Evidence of special prizes and distinctions, of other knowledge, of commitment in student council, as well as evidence of social or ecological commitments, involvement in higher education policy or evidence of exceptional personal, social or family circumstances. This evidence does not have to be certified. Evidence of additional criteria must include information on the kind and duration of the commitment (from...to) as well as the number of hours per week/month/year, if applicable.
If the evidence is not in German or in English, a copy of a certified German or English translation is necessary. (§ 4, para. 4 of the Germany Scholarship statutes).

7. If applicable, certifications of internships and employment, if they confirm outstanding achievements.

BAföG:
The Deutschlandstipendium and the Federal Funding BAföG are supplementary funding programs, so that there are no reductions when receiving both of them. Providing the information about a potential BAföG funding is optional and if doing so this disclosure will not influence the final decision regarding the awarding of the Germany Scholarship.
The information about the BAföG funding will be considered after the relevant awarding commission has reached their decision of the future scholarship holders.

Applicants who miss the deadline specified in the call for applications or whose applications are not submitted in due form, are incomplete (e.g. not signed) or are submitted twice are excluded from the application process. It is not possible to submit evidence later.

Please submit your written application from December 01, 2017 to December 17, 2017 in hardcopy form to the address specified above.

Please note:

  • Do not staple or glue documents together. Please do not include any notes and do not use plastic covers.
  • Students who receive a scholarship will presumably be notified in writing until the end of April 2018 (but no later than the end of May 2018).
    If you have not received a notification of the award of a Germany Scholarship until then, you were not considered in the selection process. No written notification of this will be issued.
  • The application documents will not be returned to the applicants.
