ISEP (International Student Exchange Program)

The ISEP-Program offers students of the University of Stuttgart the opportunity to complete a semester abroad at almost 300 universities around the world. ISEP differentiates between two program-routes: ISEP Exchange and ISEP Direct.

ISEP Exchange

Through the ISEP Exchange Program, students can spend a semester abroad at one of the universities participating in the program in Asia, Australia, Africa, Europe, as well as North- and South America. Students will not have to pay tuition fees at the guest institution. To partake in the program, students have to pay a set program fee; in return, they will receive a free accommodation and catering at the guest university.

Program overview

You can find an overview of all programs offered by partner universities here: Program Finder – ISEP Study Abroad. To receive said overview, go to the category “More Filters” and then klick “Program”, “ISEP Exchange” – here you will receive an overview of all universities that offer tuition free exchange semesters.

In your application, you can select preferences for universities within different regions. Since each individual university only offers a limited number of slots, you have to select 5-10 different universities. These have to fall under different placement categories (“Chance of Placement”. The placement categories are: “Excellent”, “Good”, “Fair”, “Limited”, and “Most Competitive”.

At least two of the selected universities should fall under the category “Good” or “Excellent”. Only one of the universities should fall under the category “Most Competitive”.

Therefore, applying to the ISEP Exchange Program is most suitable for students, who are flexible with regard to their university preferences.

  • The program itself is open for students of all faculties and fields of study. However, there might be restrictions set by individual universities, for example, regarding the option to take post-graduate courses, a limited selection of study programs, etc.
  • Bachelors Program: Start of studies at the guest institution is possible after the 5. semester
  • Masters Program: Start of studies at the guest institution is possible after the 1. Semester
  • Taking part in a group information session for ISEP
  • Taking part in an individual information session by organizing an appointment with the ISEP-program coordinator after the group information session
  • International students that are not citizens of a EU/EWR state and whose residence permit will expire right before or during the stay abroad cannot partake in the exchange programs. The immigration office only gives out appointments for extending the residence permit right before it expires. A premature extension of the residence permit is therefore not possible. You can find more information on the immigration office websites.

ISEP Direct

Through the ISEP Direct Program, students can complete a one-semester or short-term exchange at popular universities all around the world. Here, the tuition fees of the guest university will have to be paid by the students directly. However, the tuition fees for studying through the ISEP program are lower than the regular tuition fees. The chances for a placement at the preferred university are quite good when studying through the ISEP Direct Program.

You can find an overview of all universities partaking in the ISEP Direct Program here: Program Finder – ISEP Study Abroad. To receive said overview, go to the category “More Filters” and then klick “Program”, “ISEP Direct” – here you will receive an overview of all universities that offer exchange semesters for a tuition.

  • The ISEP Direct Program itself is open for students of all faculties and fields of study. However, there might be restrictions set by individual universities.
  • Bachelors Program: Start of studies at the guest institution is possible after the 5. semester
  • Masters Program: Start of studies at the guest institution is possible after the 1. Semester
