How is the program structured?
The FAME master’s program comprises four semesters (120 ECTS), which must be completed in accordance with the examination regulations. The program is divided into several blocks, each of which offers a wide range of options:
1. Modules & Lectures:
Modules may consist of lectures, seminars, exercises, and/or laboratory work. To successfully complete a module, students are required to attend the corresponding courses and pass the examinations. Further details are available in the latest module handbook.
Engineering Fundamentals: This module consists of three courses designed to provide a comprehensive foundation in core engineering principles. If your previous bachelor’s degree did not cover certain subject areas, you can make up for them here. If necessary, the admissions committee will provide guidelines on the subjects you are required to take.
Engineering Fundamentals I–III includes the modules listed below:
- Computational Fluid Dynamics
- Differential Algebratic Equations I&II
- Fundamentals of Optical Engineering
- Fundamentals of Powertrain Engineering
- Micro Technology and Microsystems Technology
- Models and Test Methods in Biomedical Engineering – Lectures and Practices
- Process Engineering
- Production Related Infomations Technologies
- Systems Engineering
- Thermo and Fluid Dynamics
Keep in mind that not all modules are available every semester, check C@MPUS to see what’s offered in current semester.
Language and Culture: In this section, you choose a subject from the field of work culture and a language that you want to study in depth. For students from abroad, we offer special courses designed to make living and working in Germany easier, and if you come from Germany, there are also other offers to help you broaden your horizons.
Focus Fields: In the two Focus Fields, which you can select according to your interests, you may choose from more than 140 different subjects to develop your individual academic focus and personal profile. The subjects cover the entire spectrum of mechanical engineering in Stuttgart and are taught exclusively in English. Each Focus Field is supervised by a professor who is on-hand to answer your questions and provide guidance during your studies.
Focus Fields I & II includes the modules listed below:
- Automation, Robotics and Mechanics
- Automotive Engineering and Advanced Mobility
- Biomedical Engineering
- Energy Engineering
- Manufacturing
- Medical, Optical and Precision Engineering
- Systems and Technology Development
Keep in mind that not all modules are available every semester, check C@MPUS to see what’s offered in current semester.
2. Engineering Practice Term: As an applied science, it is important to us that you also learn about practical life as part of an organization. For this purpose, one semester of the program is reserved for either a mandatory internship at a company (please refer to the internship guidelines) or a research project at a university research institute, depending on the profile you wish to pursue. In addition, you will participate in a compulsory supporting module (accompanying seminar) at the university to discuss and reflect on your experiences.
Engineering Practice Term:
- Industrial internship Or Academic research project at a university
- Reflecting on Work Life
3. Master's thesis: You will complete your studies with a master's thesis in one of your two focus fields. This will be closely supervised by the staff of the institute you choose for this purpose.
Please note:
- Students must register for lectures and corresponding examinations through C@MPUS. Further information about the registration process is available on the C@MPUS information page.
-
Registration for exams is only possible during the official exam registration period. To find the relevant dates, please check the university’s academic calendar here.
