Astronauts have been living at the International Space Station for more than 20 years.
The station is just 400 kilometers away from us, but for many years now, we humans have wanted to go even further: back to the moon, to Mars and beyond. Might we be able to live on Mars one day, in a sustainable way? What might a city on Mars look like? How would we feed ourselves on our neighboring planet? And above all, what can we learn from our life on earth today that would help in this endeavor?
An interdisciplinary group of space experts, SONet, has been focusing on these questions. The result is Nüwa. The project was presented at the Mars Society 2020 competition and was one of the top ten projects among hundreds of proposals. Dr. Gisela Detrell, Head of the Life Support Systems research group at the Institute of Space Systems will be explaining the details of this extraordinary city design. The astronaut Reinhold Ewald, Professor of Astronautics and Space Stations at the University of Stuttgart, will moderate this event.
