Nearly one in seven women in Germany is affected by sexualized violence, and still counting. Besides private rooms, public nightlife is one of the most common scenes of sexualized violence. With the campaign “nachtsam. Mit Sicherheit besser feiern” (“nightaware.Party better with safety”) [de], the Ministry for Social Affairs, Health and Integration in Baden Württemberg developed state-wide preventive measures regarding sexual harassment and assaults in nightlife.

The University of Stuttgart, too, has joined the campaign. “Respectful and mindful interaction with each other is important to us not only in the lecture hall. Outside of lectures, too, there is no place at the University of Stuttgart for assaults and discrimination. Therefore, we, too, are ‘nightaware’ when partying,” says Dr. Grazia Lamanna, the university’s Gender Equality Officer.

One part of the campaign are training sessions, where people learn how to take preventive action against sexual harassment, discrimination and assaults against women in nightlife. Interested event organizers can sign up for the training via the “Get involved” button [de] and will then get access to the training videos, or they can book a one-on-one training session (on site or via video conferencing). You can choose online between a 30-minute, a 70-minute, and a 90-minute session. The 90-minute session will be guided by a coach. You can enable access for all your fellow organizers. After completing the training, participants will receive a certificate, along with materials such as posters and stickers, and a guideline for the implementation of the concept.

The University of Stuttgart is calling on all employees, student councils, and students who organize events to get actively involved. The Gender Equality Office is providing posters and stickers for the promotion of the campaign.
